Why Wood for Your Floor?

Why Wood?

If you’ve been in the industry long enough, this will all be a primer on the basics of why you would want a wood floor. But for those that are new, or just needing a refresher, let’s go over the advantage a wood floor has over other flooring options and why a homeowner would want to spend the extra money on wood when laminate, luxury vinyl tile, or carpet can have a lower cost per square foot.

Long Term Investment

Initial costs for solid or engineered wood may seem high, but the long term benefits of this type of floor can be worth the upfront costs. When properly installed and maintained, wood out-lasts laminate and carpet. Solid and some engineered wood flooring also have the advantage of being re-finished after a few years if desired. Many older homes have floors that have been around for generations and are still going strong. Wood is the choice for the long haul.

Value

It is hard to measure the precise value a wood floor may add to your home, and there are certainly factors to consider including interior location and the home itself. The perceived value is always there and many realtors will tell you that wood flooring will increase the value of your home.

Timeless

Hardwood has been used for hundreds of years as a flooring option. In the grand scheme, carpet and laminate are only recent options and hardwood continues to gain market share in the flooring industry.

Sustainability

One principal we endeavor to follow in life and business is stewardship. In days past wood was harvested without thought of future generations, but we are now in an age where sustainable forestry is replenishing what is taken. Wood is the most sustainable flooring choice.

A Healthy Choice

For those who suffer from allergies, wood is an ideal choice. Carpet traps dirt, contaminates, and allergens in the fibers which can exasperate symptoms. A hard floor is not hospitable to dust mites and provides easy clean up to keep dirt and dander in check. The AAFA (Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America) recommends hardwood flooring for those suffering with asthma or allergies. Although the allergens will still be present, they will be easier to see and clean than if they were trapped in carpeting.

Things to Keep in Mind

Like any floor, proper care and maintenance need to be considered. A consistent environment and cleaning schedule will keep your floors in good shape for decades, but when ignored, will cause costly repairs or replacement. Wood is also affected by excess moisture, so if you have known issues with plumbing or flooding in particular areas of your home, you may want to consider other options. Remember that a lot of other popular flooring choices will not hold up to a major flood or improper care, so hardwood is still a contender even with its vulnerabilities.

Consider the Quality of Wood

So many times when making a purchase, there is a spectrum of costs and quality. The Master’s Craft works hard to source and produce quality flooring. You may be able to find cheaper wood alternatives, but our flooring will be a good, quality choice whether you choose solid, engineered, prefinished, or unfinished.

ROI

When choosing flooring for a space for yourself or guiding your client through different options, keep these things in mind. Wood may have steeper initial costs, but brings great value, durability, and benefits that makes it a worthwhile investment.
