We believe that one of the best ways we can use our skills and resources as a company is not only to serve our customers, but also to serve in our local communities.
Recently our team in NW Arkansas helped build a deck for the Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County in Rogers, Arkansas.
“People value money in our culture quite a bit, but the most valuable resource that I have is my time,” said Mark Wagner, manager of our location in Bethel Heights, AR.
“I want to invest that time in the places that matter most, and that’s in the lives of others.”
Mark’s church, First Baptist of Rogers, planned this project as part of their week-long serve week. A fellow church member and one of our customers, Philip Reznicek led the deck project.
The build took about three days, with many people from the church helping as well.
“This outdoor seating will serve for a lot of our mental health clients,” explained Melanie Halbrook, Education Specialist at the advocacy center.
“They can come out here where it is a little more scenic, peaceful and calm and have the session out here.”
The advocacy center’s vision is to eliminate child abuse through empowering children to find their voice. They provide child abuse victims and their families comprehensive services in a child-friendly atmosphere while providing child abuse prevention, awareness, and education to the community.
“We know that sunlight and just being outside can be good for the mind, body, and soul, so we really try to incorporate that into their treatment,” explained Melanie.
Because our Arkansas location specializes in specialty lumber, Mark and Matt Russell, our lumber sales rep, contacted two of our partners who provided custom milled cypress lumber which was the exact specs needed for the deck.
“[The Master’s Craft] gives us the freedom to go and do what it is we feel called to do when it comes to helping out in our community, and just building into others and making the lives of others better,” said Mark.
Often a big obstacle we face is not being unwilling to serve, but rather finding opportunities and organizations to work with. Sometimes it takes a little research and initiative to find ways to help.
“There’s always opportunity just to serve, and to be turned down would be a very rare thing,” observed Mark, “‘I don’t know where to serve,’ is not a good excuse.”
